This year Sparta's holiday season has a center. Santa's 2026 headquarters is at 177 E. Division, on the rebuilt Town Square. It sits in front of the entrance to Candy Cane Lane and next to the new yule log fireplace, which puts the three things families look for in December within a few steps of each other. The new synthetic ice rink is a short walk away at Balyeat Field, 190 Olmstead Road. That is also where the Chamber sends drivers to park for Shop Sparta.
Between the square and the lot, the season now runs out of one compact part of downtown, so a family can park once and reach the tree, Santa and the skating on foot.
Last December, Santa Kept Moving
Compare it with last year's schedule. The Santa & Friends visit list the Sparta Chamber posted for December 2025 sent him to about a dozen stops around town:
- Tom's Hometown Bakery, 476 E. Division, on a Saturday morning
- Creekside Kids Boutique, 201 E. Division, on two separate dates
- Scarffe Chiropractic, 450 S. State St., on a Thursday afternoon
- The Sparta Library, on a Saturday morning
- 220 E. Division and 156 E. Division, one evening each
- The Chamber office at 194 E. Division for most of the rest, some nights with a Holiday Wagon Ride, Classic Rudolph characters or Frozen characters, and one night open to pets
That was a schedule you had to plan around. Families checked the list, picked a stop that fit and drove to it.
The Chamber's 2026 Christmas page changes that by giving Santa a home base in Town Square. It also says this year's visit dates haven't been released yet. Until they are, the address is the news. When the dates do come out, they'll point to a spot that also has a fireplace and a lit walking path right beside it.
The Corner Where Three Traditions Meet
The Chamber's Town Square page describes outdoor seating, a permanent stage along Nash Creek and public restrooms. Kent County's update adds a community room, housed in a near-replica of the 1888 rail depot. Sources put the cost at two different figures. FOX 17 reported a $1.1 million project in October 2025, with a winter rink listed in its scope. In May 2026, Kent County's update put it at about $700,000, of which $300,000 came from Community Development Block Grant funds.
The fireplace was one of the last pieces. The Village's June 16, 2026 DDA minutes recorded the Town Square punch list as complete, with the stage and fireplace still being finished. By the holidays, the Chamber is using that fireplace as a landmark. Candy Cane Lane is a free walk through inflatable Christmas characters and light shows, set right behind Town Square. The Chamber says you'll find its entrance by the yule log fireplace.
Longtime residents will remember different directions. In 2023 the Chamber described Candy Cane Lane as a stroll along the paved sidewalk behind the library at 80 N. Union St. This year's directions start at the fireplace, and Santa's headquarters faces the same entrance.
Balyeat Field Holds the Rink and the Parking
The rink is the other new piece. The Chamber's winter rink page calls it a "quaint, synthetic, hometown ice skating rink." It takes up a small part of the east section of the Balyeat lot at 190 Olmstead Road. Sparta tested a similar synthetic rink for Winterfest in 2023. The Chamber credits the Village of Sparta and the Sparta Community Foundation with helping launch the seasonal version.
The rink opens in time for Shop Sparta on November 20 and stays up through Winterfest in February 2027. That makes it the longest-running piece of the season. Rental skates will be available during select hours, and personal skates are welcome as long as they have no toe picks. The Chamber says hours and other details are still coming.
Balyeat Field also connects the rink to the square through the Social District. Under the Chamber's current guidance, drinks from the district can be carried to Sparta Town Square, Balyeat Field and Rogers Park, as long as you stay inside the signed boundaries. The participating spots are Angela's Italian Restaurant at 240 E. Division, Brick Haus Brews at 133 E. Division, Downtown Trini's & Margarita Joe's at 148 E. Division, Garden Patch Restaurant at 125 N. State St., and North Kent Eagles at 186 E. Division, which is members only. The Social District page has the current rules.
Friday, November 20, Start to Finish
Shop Sparta, presented by Auto Care Excellence, is the first night the whole setup is in use. The Chamber's road-closure map lists it as 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 20, with parking at Balyeat Field. The Shop Sparta page lays out the night in this order:
- Park at 190 Olmstead and walk over. The Stroll of Lights is a standing parade of floats decorated by more than 20 businesses, parked in the roadway through downtown.
- Around 5:30 p.m., Dance With Me classes perform their Christmas showcase routines in front of the tree.
- Around 6 p.m., Santa and local carolers sing a few songs, then lead the countdown for the Tree Lighting. The Sparta Community Arts Federation carolers are also on the program, singing classic Christmas songs.
- In between, there are s'mores from Tom's Hometown Bakery while they last, firepits in the center of downtown, roasted chestnuts from a local vendor, and Christmas characters including the Rudolph crew, the Grinch, Buddy the Elf and Cindy Lu Who.
- For dinner, you can eat at area restaurants or visit the food trucks: Around Baking Company, Bougie Bowls, Patty Matters, Porknstein BBQ LLC, Royal Dogs and Ziggy's Concessions.
- At 7:30 p.m., a Christmas fireworks show closes the night downtown.
The shopping is spread along East Division.
| Stop | Address | What's there |
|---|---|---|
| Sparta Chamber | 194 E. Division | Mistletoe Market and, after the Tree Lighting, photos with Santa using your own camera |
| Dance With Me | 219 E. Division | Local artisan vendors, plus hot drinks and soup for sale |
| Print Metro | 98 E. Division | North Pole Artisan Craft Market |
| Downtown Trini's & Margarita Joe's | 148 E. Division | Artisan vendors on the patio |
| Sparta Civic Center | 75 N. Union | Make-and-take wreaths with Howard Christensen Nature Center |
Most of these stops are within a few blocks of each other along East Division. The Civic Center is the exception, just off Division on North Union.
The Weeks Around It
The rest of the season is planned with the same square and the same downtown blocks in mind.
| Dates | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|
| November 12–14 | Doe Days: A Sip and Shop Event | Downtown Sparta |
| November 20 | Shop Sparta, Tree Lighting and rink opening | Town Square, E. Division and Balyeat Field |
| November 22 – December 20 | Santa Mailbox | 194 E. Division |
| December 3–5 | Christmas Around the World: A Sip and Shop Event | Downtown Sparta |
| February 2027 | Winterfest, last stretch for the rink | Balyeat Field, 190 Olmstead |
Doe Days ends the night before Michigan's regular firearm deer season opens. The DNR's 2026 deer regulations summary lists that season as November 15–30 statewide. The Sip & Shop page says vendor lists and promotions for both weekends are still to come.
For the Santa Mailbox, the Chamber asks that you put a return address on each letter so Santa can write back. It suggests writing the address in a couple of places, since snow sometimes gets into the box and blurs the ink.
If you're mapping out your own December in Sparta, or wondering how a home near downtown fits a calendar like this one, the team at Clark & Clark is happy to talk it through. We follow these Town Square changes closely, and we're glad to share what we know.
